While star guests like actors Judi Dench and John Turturro will light up the red carpet at the 46th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival — which starts rolling in the West Bohemian spa town on Friday evening — organizers say much of the focus this year will be on first-time directors. In fact, 54 of the nearly 180 feature-length movies being screened over its nine days are debuts.
Karel Och, who this year takes the reigns as artistic director at KVIFF, says the unusually high number of debuts in the 2011 program has come about more by accident by design: his team simply received scores of impressive pictures by first-time directors. Actually, he says, he himself only realized there were so many while leafing through a freshly printed catalog.
“But still, we’ve always considered Karlovy Vary as a festival which gives a chance to young filmmakers. We try to present fresh films by talented new directors who are maybe not yet known in the world,” Och told Czech Position. “Just this simple count sort of confirmed this strategy.”
As for which debuts visitors should make an extra special effort to catch, the chief architect of KVIFF’s program is quick to mention the drama “Volcano,” by Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson, and “Breathing” helmed by Austrian actor Karl Markovics
